France - Chartres - Galerie de Chartres
Paris, May 26th, 2004 Below are the results of the auction of mechanical music, etc., in Chartres, France, on Sunday, May 23d, 2004. All prices are hammer prices in euros. (May 2004: 1 euro (1 €) = approximately 1.20 US dollar, bank exchange rate.) To the prices in euros add a premium of 15%, all taxes included (and so you get roughly the hammer price in dollars!). More than 350 lots were presented to the rather calm international audience inside the old gothic chapel where auctions take place. To sum up, prices were rather sustained for the numerous lots which were sold, but curiously a certain number of very interesting lots (some humorous postcards, several instruments) were not considered by potential buyers -- and we wonder why ! Philippe Rouillé Prix en euros. Les lots non mentionnés ont été
retirés ou non vendus.
At 2 pm : ca 1500 postcards from the collection of Claude P. Marchal
Introduction to the 65 Lots of Postcards (701 to 765). Claude P. Marchal (1927-1997) was the son of the founder of the well known "Marchal" company, specialized in car equipment, especially car lights. The logo of the firm was a cat, whose eyes are able to see in darkness : "I lend my eyes only to Marchal" was the publicity of the firm. Claude Marchal was also a fan of mechanical music. So, in 1976, he founded the AAIMM (Association des Amis des Instruments et de la Musique Mécanique), always prosperous with more than 600 members and a good quarterly journal. With passion, he collected many instruments, but also postcards depicting organs, organ players and phonographs, many with touches of humour, featuring animals or comic situations. The more than 1500 postcards (of which more than 850 were issued before 1940) we proposed to-day to auction come from his collection. Systematically, and especially for postcards with animals, he collected various versions of the same postcard (changes in colour, caption language, etc.), from 2 to a maximum of 12 ! but mostly 2, 3 or 4. We only mention these variations when they are over 3 or 4 similar copies. Excepted in the rare cases where these cards were just stacked in an envelope, they are usually presented four by four, maintained (but easily removed !) by corners on a standard sheet of paper (A4, 21x29,7 cm). These sheets were piled in special boxes, according to a thematic classification we have respected. On almost every postcard, he stamped his logo : a green four leaf clover.
We strongly hope that, in their incredible variety, these postcards will give you as much pleasure as Claude Marchal got himself when collecting them. Philippe Rouillé
