picturing a one-eyed standing Punchinello playing a guitar, while supporting
on his head a young equilibrist boy. Fine papier maché Punchinello

Nº 625 "Punchinello as a cockerel" A fine pull along toy
inspired by the cartoonists of the second half of the XIXth c. who often
represented a man as an animal. Very fine papier maché cockerel,
closed mouth bisque head with blue glass eyes. Mounted on 4 wheels (accident
to one wheel). In fine condition, end of XIXth c. Length 30 cm, Height
56 cm.
Nº 626 Punchinello and a carriage Fine pull along toy featuring
Punchinello standing in a wooden cart, drawn by a horse mounted by a young
boy. 3 animations : the wheels of the cart through various pulleys, Punchinello's
head and right arm thanks to a double pulling action, and the rocking of
the horse through a third pulling action. German open mouth bisque heads.
Fine condition of the whole item. German, ca 1900. Length 39 cm Height
42 cm.

three-wheeled toy, with two movements caused by excentric driven pulling
actions : the head, and the two arms. Fine painted papier maché
head, original clothes. End of the XIXth c. Height : 46 cm.
Nº 628 "The horse riders" An exceptional mechanical
toy picturing a fairground attraction, attributed to Renou. On a fairground
platform, with mirrors at the rear, three characters mounted on swinging
horses are running a contest : the middle one seems to be the winner. Small
open mouth bisque heads. Fine condition of the whole toy, costumes included.
Musical movement. Ca 1900. Height 44 cm Width 42 cm Depth 25 cm.
Nº 629 Decamps, a boy on his donkey. A charming automaton
with three movements, of the head and of each arm. Painted metal hands,
bisque SFBJ head (not original ?). The head of the donkey is associated
with the movement of the right hand. Base with one tune musical movement.
Ca 1900 (some old restorations). Length 32 cm Height 40 cm.
Nº 631 A charming small animated picture of "a village
on a river" with a train riding on a bridge, a water mill, a wind mill
and two boats in the front part. Pull cord mechanism with a small music,
black wooden frame. On the back, two interesting advertisements :
"Au Polichinelle Vampire. Simone passage de l'Opéra" and a large
label "... Plus de musiques cassées par le tirage du cordon de remontoir"
(No more broken musical movements when pulling the winding cord). In perfect
condition, but was restored several times. Epoque Napoléon III (2d
half of the XIXth c.). 34 cm x 30 cm.
Nº 632 "A whistler" Sculpted and painted wooden character
leaning on a street lamp. This type is a typical and famous production
from the Black Forest. It holds a whistling mechanism, of the singing bird
type. Mid XXth c. Height 45cm.
Nº 633 A singing bird snuffbox attributed to Bontems,
Black tortoiseshell box (some restorations) L. 10 cm, with a small locker
for the key. Lid engraved with a flower decoration. 4 movements : rotates,
beak, wings and tail. Very good condition of presentation and playing (we
did not open it). Ca 1900.
Nº 635 A rare and large animated picture depicting
a harbour with many movements : A balloon in the sky, a train crosses a
bridge, a three-masted sailing ship is pitching on the front, a waterfall
is on the left side, a watermill and a windmill. A clock
stands in the building on the left side. Pull-cord mechanism with wooden
pulleys. With a small music. Ca 1860/1880. Very good condition of the whole
item. Height 57 cm, width 68cm, depth 27cm.
Nº 636 A cart with she-goats. Splendid mechanical toy, 2d
half of XIXth c. A wicker landau clothed with blue silk, is drawn by 2
she-goats. The mechanism is placed under the landau, and an excentric pulling
action activates the legs of the goats. Very fine original condition (except
a few usual small chips). Height 68 cm.
Nº 638 A large picture clock with angelus striking and
12 tunes movement by Soualle. Fine sculpted and (re)gilt frame 86 x
103 cm. Fine painting with many characters, houses, a green alley, various
rivers, mills, boats, etc. Good clock movements with striking for the time
and the angelus (gong) on rectangular brass bedplates, in good condition.
Large (not original ?) musical movement, 12 tunes on a 33 cm brass cylinder,
stamped ADRE SOUALLE on the comb. It has suffered a run (6 teeth and several
broken tips. The endless screw and some command rods are missing).
Ca 1860 (restorations). Alexandre Soualle made good musical box movements
in Villetaneuse near Paris from 1855 to 1861.
Nº 639 Vichy (?), a young boy on his donkey Fine mechanical
three-wheeled toy. German open mouth bisque head, lead (repainted) hands,
three movements : the arms, the boy's head, and the head of the donkey.
In fine condition, ca 1900. Length 26 cm.
Nº 640 Gustave Vichy, a young woman chasing butterflies
Fine mechanical toy on 3 wheels. The mechanism is stamped with the G. Vichy
mark in an oval. In working order. Closed mouth bisque head (with Steiner
expression ?), chestnut paperweight eyes, bisque shoulders, lead hands,
original clothes (some wear). Height 30 cm.
Nº 641 Gustave Vichy, a young lady on a see-saw Fine mechanical
toy on 3 wheels. Fine bisque head (Steiner ?), bisque shoulders and hands,
paperweight blue eyes. Movements of the head and right arm of the lady,
and a clever mechanism activates the see-saw. Fine condition of the whole
item (excepted accidents to two spokes on a wheel). Ca 1880. Length 32
cm Height 37 cm.
Nº 642 Gustave Vichy : a nurse and her child. Fine automaton
depicting a young woman taking a walk with a female child. Fine condition
of the clothes and painting. The mechanism inside the body of the young
girl activates her legs. Closed mouth head, chestnut eyes (Steiner ?),
bisque shoulders and hands. Ca 1880-1890. Length 30 cm. Height 34 cm. A
similar model is reproduced in "L'Age d'Or des Automates", by Bailly, p
91.
Nº 643 Bontems. A fine cage with three singing birds.
Rectangular gilt wooden base with decoration of garlands of foliage. Fine
singing (continuous or alternate). Movements of the heads, beaks and tails.
end of XIXth or beginning of XXth c. Height 62 cm.
Nº 645 A fine musical picture clock with angelus,
in a fine sculpted gilt frame 76x90 cm. Fine painting (59x72 cm, some restorations)
with characters (a musician and a dancing couple) in a green scenery with
a church, waterfalls, ruins and mountains. Tapered sided box. 2 good clockworks,
one for the clock (striking) and the other for the angelus. Good snuffbox
type 2 tunes (not original but period) musical movement, teeth by groups
of 4, nice notation, pulling winding. Good general condition, needs some
adjustments. The balance (thread suspension) and the command rods for the
music are missing. Mid XIXth c.
Nº 647 A theater with dancers A small automaton scene featuring
an open air theater, with mirrors at the back of the stage. On the stage,
five small dancers with period silk clothes and wooden legs. The originality
of this model lies in the external representation of a green open air theater
: instead of a curtain, 2 shutters close it. With a musical movement, end
of the XIXth c. (some later transformations). Height 36 cm Depth 15 cm
Width 27 cm.
Nº 648 Lambert : a Bébé with her Punchinello.
A fine automaton in its original wooden case, with a label and the plate
of the Magasin des enfants, passage de l'Opéra. The Bébé
cries because she has broken her Pulcinello : very fine bisque Jumeau
character head, bisque hands. Punchinello : original wig and underwear
(original silk dress). With her right hand, she shows her broken Punchinello,
and wipes her tears with a handkerchief hold in her left hand. On a musical
base covered with original velvet. The key is marked L.B. Height 50cm.

Nº 650 Lambert : a harp female player A young seated woman
plays the harp. Two movements of the head and movements of each arm. Fine
bisque head with the characteristic expression attributed to Jumeau, bisque
hands. Partly period clothes (restorations). On a base housing the mechanism
and a fine two tunes musical movement. End of the XIXth c. Original key,
stamped "L. B." Height 60 cm.

(a surprising pie) An automaton toy featuring a small pastry cook with

Nº 653 Decamps. "La Ballerine" (A female dancer) Charming
and gracious automaton of a female dancer, with closed mouth Jumeau head,
blue paperweight eyes, bisque hands and shoulders. She turns around with
movements of her head, shoulders, leg, and arms holding a garland of flowers.
Good original condition. End of the XIXth c. Height 36cm.
Nº 654 Renou. A young lady with a fan Fine automaton
with closed mouth bisque head, fixed blue eyes, metal hands. Two movements
: the head and the left arm holding a bunch of flowers, and the right hand
waving a fan. Fine original condition (some usual wear). End of the XIXth
c. Height 29cm.
Nº 656 Lambert : a fashionable lady with a mirror A fine
automaton with closed mouth Jumeau head, paperweight blue eyes, stamped
in red "taille 4". She turns her head from left to right, she powders her
face, then looks at herself in the mirror. Fine lateral and vertical movements
of the head, movements of the two arms, bisque hands. Rich original clothes
(usual wear). Base with one tune musical movement and tunesheet. End of
the XIXth c. Height : 53 cm.
Nº 657 Lambert, a female mandolin player A young seated
woman plays her instrument. Two movements of the head, of the two arms,
and of the right leg which taps the rythm. Closed mouth bisque head, blue
paperweight eyes, bisque hands and shoulders (repair to two fingers). Original
clothes (some wear). On a base housing the mechanism and a musical two
tunes movement (small usual repairs). End of the XIXth c. Original key,
stamped "L. B." Height 58 cm
Nº 658 Roullet Decamps, "Coquette au miroir", (A smart
lady in front of her mirror), a fine automaton with red-stamped Jumeau
head, closed mouth, blue paperweight eyes, bisque hands. 3 movements :
she looks herself two times in the mirror, then moves her head, then breathes
two times in the bunch of flowers she holds in her right hand. Canted cornered
base covered with red velvet, one tune musical movement. Height : 52 cm.
Good original condition (with two wigs, one being original).
Nº 659 Gustave Vichy. "la marchande de fleurs"
A rare automaton of a flower girl, depicting a woman standing in front
of a wicker basket. She leans down, picks up a flower, breathes it and
shows it to the passer-by. Pivoting head, bisque head, shoulders and arm,
attributed to Gaultier. The mechanism with a two tunes music is housed
in the basket. Remade clothing, some missing flowers. Height 48cm - Length
42 cm.
Nº 661 Vichy. A seated monkey playing the harp on
a chair with red velvet cover, fine wooden harp, painted with embossed
metal decoration. Papier mâché head with animation of the
eyes and the mouth (needs revision). Fine movements of the arms and the
hands, period clothing (some restorations). Mechanism and music inside
the chair (usual restoration). Ca 1880. Height 49 cm.
Nº 662 A round metal cage with two singing birds haut.
28cm. Movements of the heads, beaks and tails. Good condition, it sings,
but needs cleaning and some adjustments. Mid XXth c.
Nº 663 An animated advertising picture for the Karcher
beer. with a musical box (made by Perréal, Paris) depicting
the famous travelator in the 1900 World Fair in Paris, travelling in front
of the main pavilions (Palais de l'électricité, Petit palais,
etc...). A small pull cord musical movement activates the whole item through
a set of pulleys. 30cmx29cm.
Nº 664 Jaf. An advertising electrical automaton. depicting
a standing boy who showed panels. Mechanism with 6 cams, a blowing (?)
device (electrical, motor missing). Affixed with a brass plate "Jaf. Publicité
animée". Height of the character : 42cm - Base : L. 60 - l. 40 -
H. 20cm. Incomplete, needs restoration. (The period catalogs show this
item).
Nº 665 Marcu. "Dandy fumeur" A fine automaton of a
dandy smoker, composition head, blue glass eyes, he is standing with a
stick in his left hand, and a cigarette holder in his right hand. Movements
of both arms, of the head, smoking mechanism and music. On a red velvet
covered base. Fine working and conservation condition (Ca 1970). Height
65cm.
Nº 666 Farkas, a fine automaton as a "Fumeur de narguilé",
(a narguilé Turkish smoker), ca 1970, small musical movement in
the base attributed to Reuge ("La marche turque"). Ca 1960/70 (some wear
to the silk at the rear).

Nº 668 Phalibois : a partially built automaton depicting
a man seated in an armchair, for an advertising model for the Valda pills
: a doctor and his female patient. Fine staff head, with seven pulling
actions, with a movement imitating breathing. Mint condition, without motor,
it was in the stock bought by the Maison Decamps. H 58 cm.

neck stamped in red "Déposé Tête Jumeau 8", closed
mouth, blue paperweight eyes, pierced ears.

Nº 695 A small 14 keys organette, with 2 16,5 cm cardboard
discs. 26 cm long case, handle. Ca 1900. Medium condition, needs attention.
Nº 696 A 6 tunes musical box, Simple case, red painted inside,
tunesheet "Fabrique de Genève", leverwound. Brass bedplate and 20,5
cm cyl. Ca 1860/70. It has suffered a run : needs repinning, but no broken
teeth. Otherwise good general condition.
Nº 697 A 3 tunes musical box for the Chinese market Simple
varnished box, 35 cm. Lever wound, nickel plated 15 cm cylinder. 3 broken
teeth. Needs restoration. End of the XIXth c.
Nº 698 A musical cigar dispenser Curiously simplified and
narrow classical black 6 opening doors model. Height 30 cm. End of XIXe
c. Good 2 tunes snuffbox type movement (blocked) with tunesheet. Missing
feet, some worm damage.
Nº 699 H. Métert, a 6 tunes musical movement In an
old oval base decorated with inlay, and a partially glassed domed lid.
Keywound (with a handle), brass 28 cm cylinder. Ca 1875. Good condition
but plays too fast (due to replaced wings in the governor). Needs cleaning.
Nº 700 Clariophon, a very rare 24 keys organette unhappily
in bad condition. Black case (accidents) 29x45x33 cm, with (missing) handle
in front. Two oval openings on the lid and on the front allow the sound
to go outside. The device bearing the reeds (24 doubled reeds) may be pushed
down to press on a 18 cm long cylinder (diam. 15 cm), around which are
rolled the zinc perforated plates (missing). It looks otherwise complete
(but we cannot guarantee it) and needs a complete restoration. End of XIXth
c. It is a very original and complex system. For a detailed description,
see the recently published "Organette book" by McElhone, which asserts
that only a score of these instruments are known worldwide.
Nº 702 A fine 2 tunes musical snuffbox, with teeth by groups
of 5. Black composition case, with a fine lid depicting "le triomphe
de Galatée". Long 94 mm. Handwritten tunesheet (rare) : "Demain
au point du jour. Si je suis infidèle. Dans la fiancée".
Restorations and small accidents (hinges, lower corners, inside lid split).
Good movement, with very fine notation and sound. Ca 1840. Galatée
is a sea goddess, the daughter of Protée and a sister in law to
Poséidon, alias Neptune ...
Nº 703 A 2 tunes musical snuffbox Black composition case,
the lid featuring "La chambre des Députés" in Paris. Long.
93 mm. Restorations (hinges, small cracks, knobs). Fine notation with a
piccolo effect. Good condition and sound. 2d half of the XIXth c.

Nº 721 A rare and curious 35 keys "Orchestrionette Ehrlich"
Quite large organette in a case with handles, 37x65x43 cm. Handle operated.
End of the XIXth c. It looks complete. Partially restored, good deep sound.
With 18 endless strips (width 41 cm) and a "carton gamme". Cf. the recently
published book by McElhone "Organettes", p 196-197. Other models, 26 and
47 keys seem to have been produced.
Nº 722 A rare and very fine 37 keys Mélotrope In
its original wooden box (some wear and restoration to the hinges), with
its numbered transportation wedges. With its wheel to operate it.
We did not try it, but it looks complete, and in remarkable original condition.
Long. 74 cm. End of XIXth c., with 12 strips. Designed and patented by
Carpentier in the 1880's, it is a ingenious portable device which allows
to play perforated strips on any keyboard.
Nº 723 Intona, a small 16 keys organette In its original
transportation case (rare). Black case with transfer decoration. Handle.
Ca 1900. In good original condition, needs some adjusting (some reeds won't
stop). With 6 metal annular discs. Model 0, as featured in Bowers p 752.
Nº 724 "The improved Mandolina", a 20 keys organette Transfer
decorated case (some wear). 35x40x34 cm. Handle. Uses 13,5 cm paper strips.
Ca 1900. Good general condition, but needs adjustments (some reeds do not
stop). With one modern strip of paper. This machine looks very similar
to a Celestina.
Nº 725 A fine 4 tunes musical box movement, teeth by groups
of 2 Keywind, brass bedplate and 19 cm cylinder (diam. ca 31 mm). 41
groups of 2 teeth. Bass teeth to the left. Ca 1825. In a rosewood oval
clock base (some transformations), length 45 cm. 3 stops (position perhaps
modified). Handwritten mentions of old restorations on the bedplate (amidst
them Désiré à Genève, 1883). Completely restored,
excellent presentation and playing.
Nº 726 A fine 4 tunes musical box movement, teeth by groups
of 2 Keywind, brass bedplate and 17 cm cylinder (diam. ca 27 mm). 34
groups of 2 teeth. Bass teeth to the right. Ca 1825. In a mahogany oval
clock base, long. 44 cm. The position of the original 3 stops may have
been modified. Stop lever needs adjusting. Otherwise completely restored,
excellent presentation and playing.
Nº 727 A fine Pianola Aeolian 65 notes push up, To be placed
in front of a piano to play it through paper rolls. Feet pedalling operated.
Walnut case, good condition, but needs a good cleaning and revision to
operate. Ca 1900. With ca 135 65 notes rolls, most of them in very good
condition.
Nº 728 A 8 tunes and 6 bells in sight musical box "S.
Troll à Genève". Case with boxwood stringing and inlay
decoration. Lid revarnished. 58 cm. Fine tunesheet and nice classical programme
(Weber, Rossini, Strauss, etc.). Leverwound, brass 33 cm cylinder with
tune indicator, zither, and bells at will. One broken tooth, otherwise
good playing and working condition. Swiss, ca 1880.
Nº 729 A magnificent modern interchangeable Reuge musical box,
with 12 cylinders. In a luxurious serpentine case, sumptuously
varnished and decorated with boxwood stringing and rich inlays of flowers
on every 4 faces and on the domed lid. 57x39 cm. Height 26 cm. The 12 cylinders
are stocked in 2 drawers under the movement. The programme of the 36 tunes
is engraved on a metal plate inside the lid. Modern nickel plated movement,
lever wound, 11,5 cm cylinder playing 3 tunes on 72 teeth. The programme
shows a great variety : classical (Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikowski, etc.),
opéra (Bizet, Verdi, etc.) and even modern (Dr Zhivago, Love
me tender by Elvis Presley, etc.). In brand new condition, in the original
packing with leaflets, maintenance accessories, etc. This model is one
of only 200 similar ones produced for the millennium 2000.
Nº 730 A keywind 4 tunes musical box. In a simple case,
long. 31 cm. The inner glass lid does not cover the two levers on the right.
Brass 14 cm cylinder (restorations : some replaced pins). Ca 1860. Good
general condition.
Nº 731 A 8 tunes musical box by Lecoultre, Simple case with
boxwood stringing, long. 52 cm. Inverted lever winding, 3 levers. Tunesheet
(popular Scottish ? tunes), and stamped LF on the comb. A few tips replaced.
33,5 cm brass cylinder. Ca 1860. Good general condition.
Nº 732 A small coin operated 8 tunes mechanical barrel piano,
by Guilbaud Frères à la Baule. Simple case art nouveau
style (extensive worm damage). 117x80x48 cm. With its handle to wind up
the spring, and tune sheet. Metal frame. 35 piano keys and one bell. Rather
good condition, complete, very dirty, it works, but a good restoration
is strongly recommended.
Nº 733 A cylinder 4 tunes and 28 keys organette. With a
handle. Long wooden box painted in imitation of wood, 43 cm (some worm
damage). Ca 1900. Rather good general condition, but restoration needs
completion.
Nº 734 bis A rare and beautiful musical box by "Lecoultre
Frères à Genève", 8 English tunes according to
(fac simile) card. The first tune is a fine imitation of a peel of bells
(very rare indeed !). Simple box (restorations, bottom remakes),
52x18 cm, Height 13,5 cm. Red interior, winding by reversed
lever, 3 commands. N° 35600 on brass bedplate. Brass cyl.
33 cm, playing on 102 teeth (treble block of 5 remade). Good play
and sonority, restored, very beautiful condition. Ca 1865/70.
Nº 735 "Harpe Tremolo", a fine 8 tunes musical box,
57 cm box, with boxwood stringing and inlay decoration (small splits).
Fine tunesheet (small tear). Leverwound. 33 cm cylinder playing on 2 combs,
zither at will, tune indicator. End of the 19th c. Good playing and sound,
good programme. An interesting box needing a good cleaning.
Nº 736 "Boîte de gare", a coin operated musical
box, with marbles or sweets dispenser. 6 tunes. Windowcase style box
(some damage to the upholstery). 45x49x30cm. Keywound, visible movement
with 21 cm nickel plated cylinder. Zither at will, tune indicator. Ca 1900.
4 broken teeth, a little rust, some damper noises. Otherwise good condition
and sound. Although its appearance (height, mirror in the bottom) suggests
it, this box does not seem to have ever had dancing dolls.
Nº 737 3 Ariston, 24 keys organettes They look complete,
but need restoration. Without dics. Will be sold separately. A : blocked
(some rust), and without handle. B et C : in partially working order.
Nº 738 A modern musical clock in the Black Forest type to
be hanged on a wall, or placed on a shelf. Sculpted and painted dial (62
cm). 3 weights for the two independent movements : a striking clockwork,
and a musical movement with a large 30 cm wooden cylinder playing 6 tunes
on vertical tuned metal bars (as in a Westminster carillon). End of the
XXth c. Excellent condition.

varnished wooden case, with brass banding imitating the corners and the
straps. A few chips and splits. On the lid is an oval medallion depicting
a crowned head. Good snuffbox type 2 tunes movement (no tune stop). Good
general condition, end of 19th c.
