Lee Rothrock asks about repair of edge damage on piano rolls. I have
solved this problem for myself using slit Kraft paper. I guess many
people who have this problem will come up with a solution that works
for them and is based on the materials/knowledge available. My method
uses 0.05 mm [0.0020 inch] thickness paper ribbon of 4 mm width.
The problem with edge repair is the increase in paper thickness of
the repaired roll. The repaired roll ends to be soft towards the
centre of the roll width. I came across a German repair tape suggested
by a MMDer in Tasmania. This material is superb for its thinness, but
is a bit difficult to use in long lengths such as a complete roll.
I find most 'sticky tapes' are useless because they either go gooey,
or harden and lose their grip. I use a diluted PVA glue. This is
compatible with paper and doesn't dry quickly. Some rolls I have
tried to repair have used ordinary sticky tape and the tape shrinks and
swells differently to the paper roll material and in the end, the roll
is totally unplayable. No repair of mine has failed and the earliest
repairs were done around 20 years ago.
See what other response come in but if Lee wishes, he can contact me
directly.
