courtesy Don Teach This is an inside view of the Coinola Style SO orchestrion. These machines are very rare, and they had more instrumentation than the Style CO. The SO had piano, mandolin, two octaves of xylophone bars, two octaves of flue pipes, two octaves of violin pips, bass and snare drums, cymbal, Indian block, triangle, tympani, tambourine, and 15-inch Chinese crash cymbal with automatic swell for expression. There are two reproductions of these instruments that have been shown
on MBSI home tours in 1998. The CO has also been reproduced;
these reproductions are not factory-made but handmade by excellent restorers
who specialize in coin-operated piano restoration. 3 August 1999 |
