"Musique et Instruments" of 10 February 1920 courtesy Lorraine Aressy translation and comments by Robbie Rhodes
The French article sounds remarkably similar to American music trade articles of the same era; consumers in both America and France wanted to forget the Great War and enjoy peace. The dominant firm, Maunoury, Wolff et Cie, survived because their primary product was paper and their customers included the French government, and we know that paper is consumed in great quantity by a government waging war. After the war Maunoury absorbed another struggling piano roll firm and proudly announced a merger forming l'EMP, yet the former competitor was so weak that he is not named in the article. In this advert Maunoury appeals to the customer's national pride (as the French taste), and refers to foreign catalogs. I think this reference indicates that Maunoury didn't want to negotiate license from the German music publishing houses. I understand his feelings, and his customer's. -- Robbie Image EMP_10fev1920.jpg (132 kb)
