Nicole Freres Music Box Case Finish

Hello, I need to do some restoration of the case of a Nicole Freres
music box. Inside the cover it shows 12 Airs, Gamme 1655, No. 37887.
I want to know what finish was used on this case.

I also want to know what method was used to raise the (now missing)
glass cover over the actual mechanism. I will be grateful to anyone
for answers.
