When building the KT Special replicas in the 1980s I was not happy
with either steel wood screws that could rust or those with cadmium
or zinc -- plating that made the screws look cheap. So for every size
of round and flat head screw used in the instrument we bought that
size in steel and had them nickel-plated, 58 different screw sizes
in all. And in a career that had a large focus on workshop activities
I built up a large set of coffee cans of hardware.
20 years ago I sorted it all out and I now have 1065 bins and small
drawers of fasteners and all sorts of other hardware that included
machine screws and bolts from tiny to 1/2-inch, flat, brass, round,
and oval head wood screws, brass and steel pins, and all the other
small items of hardware you can think of that now covers a wall about
6 feet high and 10 feet wide.
I'm asking $1,000 which is almost what the bins and drawer cabinets
cost alone, and the replacement cost is many times the asking price,
with a lot of the screws not available at any price. These are in
Naples, Florida, and would probably fit in a van or could be
palletized and shipped by freight. I have several photos and a more
complete list of the contents for anyone who may be curious.
These things are particularly of interest to anyone working on or
rebuilding music machines or other items requiring un-plated screws
or very specific size machine screws for authenticity.
