Jim Quashnock asked about sources for archival mending tape in
240723 MMDigest. I had been using Lineco Transparent Mending Tissue
for piano roll repairs and for other archival paper repairs for over
30 years, but I can no longer recommend the Lineco tape. I recently
purchased a new roll of the Lineco and was shocked to find it is
thicker and no longer transparent. On a dark surface the tape appears
white, and not transparent.
I wrote to the Lineco company and the Vice-Presiden & General Manager
wrote back telling me that the [firm making the] nice, thin tissue
used in the document repair tape went out of business during the Covid
pandemic, as did the company that was able to apply the adhesive coating
to such a thin tissue. He apologized and said that the current product
as the best they could produce and their only other option would be to
discontinue the product.
The good news is that just last week I purchased some Filmoplast P
Transparent Paper Mending Tape, produced by Neschen in Germany. It is
identical to the old Lineco product and almost as transparent.
For piano rolls, it will most certainly be just as good as the old
Lineco mending tape. It is available in rolls 0.8" x 164' and 1"
x 100'. It is a bit more costly than the Lineco, but you get more tape
for your money.
Do _not_ get the Filmoplast PO because it is white and not transparent.
The transparent tape is Filomoplast P.
I hope this helps.
