"Happy Days Are Here Again" Atlas 3975 Phil Lynch
By Piotr Barcz
I'd like to inform everyone that I have been contacted by Matt Schultz
and Mike Cornfield and they both have a copy of this roll, Atlas 3975,
that can be scanned.
I emailed Matt and asked if he could do the scan as he already has
a Spencer Chase perforator built and working for the most part (still
doing some debugging on his end last I heard). I asked specifically
to have Mike Swanson do the scan work if possible as he reconstructs
piano roll masters with Julian Dyer's Perforation Editor, producing --
no exceptions! -- the most accurate source files for recutting rolls.
I'm overjoyed to hear that at least 5 other people have an original
copy of this roll, though; I thought there were only a couple examples
surviving so that is awesome to hear my assumption was proven wrong!
In any case, I should be getting my own perforator unit from Spencer
in the near future. (I'm depending on Spencer to make sure the machine
is bulletproof -- he has been very meticulous and I can't thank him
enough.) If the process proves to be as effective as we've hoped, then
I will be happy to cut new copies of "Happy Days Are Here Again" and
sell them for 15 bucks with free shipping like QRS has done for years.
(Which I think, yes, it's a bit pricey compared to the 75 cents of
olden days but right now it's still far cheaper than single copies
from other makers.)
