19th Century Black Forest Barrel Organ Stops
By Robert Hough
I have in my collection a 58-key weight-operated barrel organ with
131 wood flute pipes. What is very unusual is the stop operation
function.
Rather like the famous Winkel invention of single-key stop-changing
control, in this organ there are two metal hooks located along the
tracker bar (one for each stop) and each is lifted by a "staple-like"
pin on the barrel and then a second pin cancels the stop. All very
clever.
As I have not seen anything like this before, can anyone offer any
information which may identify the maker who deployed this stop
changing device? Also, has anyone seen another barrel organ with such
a stop changing device?
I look forward to your replies.
