I would like to thank Bob Pinsker (and Andrew Barrett for the referral)
for his very informative posting about Telektra pianist Hughie Woolford
[231215 MMD]; this in response to my inquiry (ref: 231207 MMD).
Bob provided a wealth of information on this important black
musician from the ragtime era. Bob also provided links to a Telektra
advertisement from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle which highlighted the hand
played dance rolls recorded by three of their artists which included
Hughie Woolford as well as a photo of the man himself.
What was also of interest to me is the name of another Telektra dance
roll pianist unknown to me (not listed in the Billings Rollography) by
the name of Louis Finley. I would certainly like to know more about him.
In the Billings Rollography for Tel-Electric, on page 198, there is
a listing for roll # 80392, "The Marriage Market, Hesitation Waltz", by
Jerome Kern, pianist unknown. After the one listing for Hughie Woolford,
there is a gap of 7 missing numbers, then a roll played by Ethel Ponce
and then another gap of 5 numbers, after which is listed the "Marriage
Market" roll. As that title doesn't seem to be the type of music Ethel
Ponce would play (the roll label states it is "for dancing") I wonder
if that might be a roll played by Louis Finley.
It is difficult to fill in much of the information on the Telektra
hand-played 80,000 series rolls for the reasons I outlined in my
original post about Hughie Woolford.
There are quite a few tantalizing ragtime era titles listed on pages
198 and 199 that are missing the name of the pianist. And what other
great song titles might be among all those missing numbers?
