Geoff Ward and I have been working "for too long" on a program
to improve the output of the infamous audio to MIDI (A2M) artificial
intelligence program. The results of this program when applied to
solo audio piano files is amazing. However on closer listening there
are some defects in the music: stray notes, too-short gaps between
notes, and pedal events and other details which can be discussed in
detail with those who are interested.
The raw output from A2M can be impressive but deficient in subtlety
if you listen carefully enough. Pedaling is what suffers the most.
Over-pedaling can ruin an otherwise good performance but identifying
this and other defects has not been easy.
Our goal is to provide a program with default settings that the
casual user can apply without having to understand the underlying
process, and also to allow the advanced user to improve on the
default settings, both in general and as to how they might apply
to specific types of music.
I have spent more time on this program than really makes sense but am,
finally, quite proud of the fact that the music now sounds better,
even after being "processed to death".
I am also impressed that Geoff has stuck with this development,
testing every version that I write and offering very helpful
suggestions. Programmers are occasionally not the most practical
of people. He is also responsible for the Help File that might help
people to understand what the program does and how to use it.
I am not providing the link to the program because I would like
to communicate directly with those who use it and hopefully to get
feedback.
If you are one of the small group of people using A2M please contact
me if you want to try this program. If you are not a "user" and might
want to be, you are welcome contact me as well.
If you just would like to discuss the theoretical and never really
do anything, please bug someone else. I am old and not likely to last
very long so I value my time more than ever.
