Player Reed Organs Found in the Wild West
By Gregory Filardo
The Wild West: cowboys, Indians, outlaws, gunslingers and player
reed organs... Huh? Player reed organs?
I have found two 46-note Aeolian player reed organs from the 1880s
in remote areas of Colorado. Both have a finish which is almost in
mint condition, and -- the organ and the player still works! There
is moderate temperature change which helps preserve the instruments.
How many of you found these items out in the Old West on location?
I also found a Ferrand Cecillian player keyboard organ which uses the
special wide roll.
You probably have found a player push-up piano player unit but how
many of the [player keyboard] organs have you seen? Mine was purchased
by a saloon in the 1890s and then when silent movies were presented in
nickelodeon theaters it was used there up until 1934. A local resident
traded a lawn tractor for it and that is where I acquired it.
