Vincent Lopez Ampico Rolls - Possible Arrangers
By Adam Aceto

Regarding the recent entry, "Vincent Lopez Ampico Rolls" -- Due to

my particular interest and expertise in the field of early Broadway

orchestrations, I couldn't help but add a few comments about the

possible arrangers used to create the rolls bearing Vincert Lopez'

name. Certainly Jens Bodewalt Lampe (who went by "JB") was one

of them.

It is important, though, to point out that Lampe was not just an

arranger but also the head of the music department at the music

publisher Remick Music Company. He oversaw the selection of publications

as well as arranging, editing, orchestrating and many other aspects of

sheet music publication and distribution.

The selection of which songs were made into roll recordings greatly

impacted sheet music sales, and vice versa, so Lampe was not merely

some arranger off the street but was an important figure in the

publishing of popular music.

Lampe moved to Edward B. Marks Music Co. in 1922 and then founded his

own firm around 1926. He died in 1929. Lampe's son, Dell, also arranged

for (and supposedly toured with) Vincent Lopez both before and after

Lampe's death.

Lopez was equally associated with the arranger Domenico Savino in print,

on record, and on roll. Savino was an editor at G. Schirmer in the 1910s

where he arranged for Victor Herbert and Rudolf Friml. From about 1920

onwards, he was the head editor at Robbins Music, Inc., and in the 1930s

he became music director for CBS radio. It was Robbins Music Co. that

was, in fact, Lopez' own publisher.

Of particular note are the two "Vincent Lopez Novelty Piano Solos"

folios which Robbins published where again Lopez' knack for marketing

shines. While the cover bears Lopez name and image, of the two

collections containing nearly a dozen pieces, not a single one is

composed by or arranged by Lopez.

Instead, the music is by familiar Ampico names like Frank Banta and

Phil Ohman, and all of the selections were edited by Savino. It is not

impossible to think that all three may have been involved in "ghosting"

Vincent Lopez on roll recordings.
