I am much saddened to read of Bob Berkman's passing. I had only
recently tried to contact him asking if he would perform for us in the
upcoming Global Piano Roll Meeting (GPRM) being held in Sydney in July
2024. I have seen Bob perform on a Pianola on several occasions, and he
was not just expert at the instrument, but entertaining as a presenter.
I visited his home on two occasions, on the first admiring the two
rolls he had of Alkan's music. On the second occasion, Bob gave me those
two rolls. At this time, he showed us an Ampico roll signed by Charles
Stoddard, and played his Credenza gramophone. This visit had been
preceded by a visit to the QRS factory, which was in a state of decay
but still producing cuts of old issues.
I will remember Bob as a gentleman and a talented musician who will
be missed by many of us.
