Hi all, This may be a bit out in left field, but please hear me out.
I am looking forward to conversing with someone familiar with square
dance calls and their related music, as my job for QRS is placing
words on computer files that will ultimately be made into new piano
rolls with words to accompany the music.
One of my recent challenges is to place the calls for a square dance
on a roll. I'm trying to figure out if there is any cadence between
the calls and the music. The roll is QRS 8677, "Square Dance Medley."
According to the catalog and the roll leader, the songs are
1. Old Folks At Home
2. Listen To The Mocking Bird
3. Buffalo Gals
4. Turkey In The Straw.
On the piano roll a series of instructions is printed, such as
SA-
LUTE
YOUR
PART-
NERS
AND
COR-
NERS
ALL.
GRAND
RIGHT
AND
LEFT
AND
PLA-
CES
ALL.
Of course, on the roll you read the words from bottom to top, instead
of top to bottom (as it appears on the left).
Is there a specific connection between each syllable in the call and
the beat of the music? It doesn't appear if there is such a connection,
but maybe the words are a bit off because the stencil for the roll was
started a bit late.
I have tried sending e-mails to two difference square dance groups,
and neither group responded. I also tried calling a contact number for
a square dance web site. No call back. That does not speak well of
those in their hobby.
Is there anybody in the player piano group who can answer this question?
Thanks very much for any response I get!
Best wishes,
Mike Walter
