[ Ref. Tom Sendall in 230412 MMDigest ]
Most smaller Symphonions have the movement attached to the bedplate
from the underside, with a "U" shaped bracket that serves as one of
the 'plates' holding the gear axles, while the bedplate itself is
the other 'plate'. You can't just 'take the bedplate off' and see
a separate motor, like you can on most disc boxes.
If you take the movement out of the case and turn it up-side-down,
you'll see two screws in either end of the "U" bracket. But, if you
unscrew them (making sure there's no spring power at all!) wanting
to remove the bedplate, then you'll have to take the turntable off
the center spindle to do it. If you take the screws out and the
spindle off you'll end up with the "U" bracket and a bunch of gears,
supported on one end only.
_Take a picture_ so that you can put it back together correctly the
first time. You can then remove the spring barrel and service the
spring, ratchet gear or pawl.
You might want to measure the height of the underside of the turntable
to the top of the bedplate, so you can put the turntable at the correct
height when it's re-assembled. If you forget to do that, you can lay
a straight-edge across the star wheels and put the top of the turntable
at the same level as the straight-edge.
The instructions of keeping the lid down may be just to try to improve
the sound of the little box. It would create a little more of a 'sound
chamber' to amplify the sound.
Good luck!
