Seek Steel Pins from 65-note Roll Spool Ends
By John Grant

A friend of mine has a number of Welte T-100 "Red" rolls that
were previously used on a multi-roll changer of some sort. On this
particular changer this required removing the spool ends and only
the cores were mounted to the changer spindle(s).

My friend now wishes to return the rolls to single-play configuration;
however the original spool ends, along with their pins, were discarded.
I have designed and am 3D-printing the flanges in two different sizes,
large (68mm diameter) and small (58.6mm diameter). That's the easy part.
I have low confidence that 3D-printed pins in the end of the flanges
would be robust enough to hold up to long-term usage. So, what to do
for these pins?

Well, it appears that the pins used in the flanges of typical 65-note
rolls are either identical to the ones used by Welte, or close enough
to be suitable substitutes. So, I am in the market for 65-note roll
spool ends _only._ Of course, several years ago, I dumped several
hundred 65-note rolls, never imagining I would ever have use for the
spool pins. Go figure!

Who among you would care to salvage (only) the pins from about fifty
65-note rolls that you are thinking about throwing out? Ideally, they
should all be the same diameter which, in an example of a remaining
roll I salvaged, are about 0.190 inch in diameter, exclusive of any
projections on the rewind pin. I can print the flange hole to accept
any given diameter, but it would save a lot of trouble if they were
all the same. Anyone? Anyone?

Thinking toward the future, I will be able to provide similar flanges,
in black as you would probably prefer (gray just happened to be in the
printer for this test specimen), for anyone who may have cracked or
broken wooden flanges on their own red paper rolls, in which case you
could salvage the pins from the unserviceable flange(s) yourself.
