I am seeking the hobby world's help for a "cold case". In around
1989, I restored an early 1840's plain fruitwood case keywind cylinder
box with a drop flap door, for the late Fred Kingsmill. The box plays
8 tunes, no tune sheet. Fred always assured me he had the tune sheet.
Before Fred passed, he had his collection sold at Stanton's. The
auction was in the spring of 2013.
The musical box is easily recognizable as it has an unusual curved
steel "retaining support" (for lack of better description) attached to
its left side flap door that covers the controls. Someone installed
this after the box was built.
It took some effort to install this as it has to pass through the left
side of the case and it serves no purpose, really, other than it gives
friction to the opening and closing of the flap door _and_ will easily
identify the box. The case is a plain fruit wood case, no inlay or
marquetry, with, roughly, a 12" to 13" cylinder.
Earlier this year, the Kingsmill family approached me with the last
of all of Fred's music box books, club magazines, etc. Lo, and behold,
I discovered the original hand written tune sheet that belongs to this
box! If you or anyone you may know bought this box, I would like to
reunite the owner with the tune sheet.
Once again, the box was sold at the Stanton's 2013 spring auction.
Unfortunately I do not know the lot number.
