FS: Fire Damaged Ampicos in No. Calif., Pt. 1/3
By Chris Galantine
Part 1 of 3, fire-damaged Haines Ampicos in Northern California
A local company in far Northern California has contacted me trying to
disburse two fire-damaged Haines Ampico pianos they have been storing.
They were the property of an elderly man whose house caught fire
approximately 3 years ago. The pianos were being stored during the
insurance claim process, but the owner recently died so the storage
company is disbursing. The direct cost will be small if any. The
storage company wants them out within the next three months. Contact
me for best guess details.
I do not know if the mechanisms have been exposed to enough heat
to damage them. I view these as parts machines or cheap long-term
labor-intensive projects for refinishing or painting, assuming the
heat did not ruin the mechanisms, but I have little-to-no experience
in that area. No stools, rolls, or other accessories are included.
No known effort was made by the prior owner to plug in and check
function prior going into storage.
Piano #1 is a Haines Ampico horizontal grand (56" long by 57.5" wide
along top) that had been rebuilt and the storage company rep says they
were told it was playing prior to the fire. I can't see the serial
number since it is on its side. See photos. There is a little veneer
damage likely from the storage company unprotected strapping plus heat
damage, and the piano hinge wood is also damaged since no piano board
was used to distribute weight on the dolly. The outside finish is shot,
but looks like the lid and key cover were down and limited soot and
smoke damage inside.
Piano #2 is an upright Haines Ampico A with serial #68,085 (1920 as
per Pierce Atlas). I can't tell if it was previously rebuilt since it
is shoved into a corner that I couldn't access much. There is some
veneer bubbling along top upper face (see photos) and smoke damage to
the exposed case. A fabric backing sheet protected the back and
soundboard, and the key area lid seems to have been down too.
If interested, contact me. Both pianos are on the ground floor and
should be relatively easy to load.
