In response to Lee Rothrock's recent post (Saturday, Sept 17, 2022)
about rubber banding problems of music rolls, I'd like to describe
my experience.
I had tried various brands and quality of bands that didn't work.
Some of the variety packs of bands having various bright colors and
sizes, in general, didn't work because they either didn't last long
or they became gummy and leached pigment into the roll paper (ruining
the roll's "leader").
I then tried the highest quality (and most expensive) of office-grade
bands: Alliance company's "Pale Gold" grade, which, according to their
site https://www.rubberband.com/ have the highest content of natural
latex) which didn't work because they became gummy (sticking to and
staining the roll paper) and completely decomposed where the band
touched any metal grommet in the roll tab.
After that, I tried some "big box store" bands (from Walmart, etc.),
which come in small bags of Alliance-brand "Advantage" (one of their
budget-priced, economy grades) bands, but these tended to not last very
many months before they cracked and came loose.
What I've settled on for now is the Alliance "Sterling" grade bands
(available online, or from office-supply or college bookstores), that
I bought in the 1-pound box (UPC 0-71815-24335-7). They have worked
well so far but, as always, "ymmv" [your mileage may vary]!
