The UK's North West Player Piano Association celebrates 50 years!
The North West Player Piano Association, which has around 70
members in total and is focused on the north and midlands of the
United Kingdom, though with members across the UK and with some
international membership, has just celebrated 50 years since its
founding in 1972 in Manchester.
Over that time we have held numerous meetings, several restoration
workshops and have produced a regular ISSN-listed publication which
has grown into the excellent Journal we have today. Our celebrations
have included:
- A Golden Anniversary meeting at the home of our Editor, featuring
a variety of standard and reproducing rolls and two guest pianists,
and (of course!) a birthday cake;
- A special, extra-packed edition of the Journal complete with golden
cover;
- A display, with live demonstrations, at the RetroTechUK event in
the Midlands area, aimed at raising awareness of player pianos among
an audience of around 700 enthusiasts of vintage entertainment and
communication technologies;
- A special Anniversary Roll of music by Florence Price, recently
recorded by a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, and currently at
editing/proof stage for issue both in hand-played standard roll and
Duo-Art format, in collaboration with a variety of experts from the
Player Piano Group and elsewhere;
- Complete re-design of our website www.pianola.org.uk which now
includes a variety of technical and more general information on
player pianos;
- A programme of social/musical meetings in the homes of our members,
including for the first time an online meeting in to overcome travel
problems in the winter period.
We continue to welcome new members; anyone interested in joining
should contact the Association Via Email -- our address can be found
on our web site at <pianola.org.uk>
Happy anniversary to the NWPPA and here's to the next fifty years!
On behalf of the NWPPA Committee,
Bob Kissick - North West Player Piano Association
