Ampico Perforator Punches Duo-Art Rolls
By Spencer Chase
I don't think we need to praise every effort made on behalf of
mechanical music. Both praise and criticism are appropriate and
hopefully the quality of our efforts will improve. Would you
listen to a white glue vinyl tube mess of a reproducing piano
that barely played and tell the "restorer" what a wonderful job
they did? I hope not.
The video of the Ampico perforator was just plain awful. I am
fascinated with machines and especially the ones of the piano roll
era. There is nothing like them. I approve of showing them in a
good light so people can marvel at their uniqueness and beauty.
The video in question was an unedited walk around the machine
in one shot with bad lighting. It also missed some of the most
interesting details. The timing (maybe it was edited but it sure
was done badly if at all) was based on the time to walk around
the machine not giving appropriate time to showing the complexity
and wonder of the machine.
If you are going to do it, either do it right or keep your amateur
efforts to yourself.
