Wurlitzer Organs at Tom Fretty's Musical Museum
By Mikey Mills
I sent Jim Williams a response to his post and thought that perhaps
other MMDers would be interested. I've owned the Wurlitzer 146 Duplex
organ since 2019 and have been slowly rebuilding it. I've done all
the valves, bell action, and tracker coupler. I was hoping to get
everything done this winter but got involved on other projects.
The organ is serial number 3000 from 1916 and had duplex roll frames
added in 1927. One side of the duplex roll frames were converted to
play 48-keyless B.A.B./Artizan rolls. This was not correct of course,
so I opted to convert that side back to 150.
It's a powerful sounding 146 with slightly different voicing from
what you find on later organs. I've not been able to find out any of
the history before the Fretty museum.
Another instrument I own from the Fretty museum is a Wurlitzer C
orchestrion which is sitting next to me as I type this.
There were quite a few fascinating instruments in this museum
I unfortunately wasn't around to visit, many of which were quite
rare. Like Jim, I wonder where the rest went!
