A party in Arlington, Virginia, has contacted me about "repairing"
their upright Marshall & Wendell Ampico prior to it's being shipped
to a relative in the Wilksbury, Pennsylvania, area at the end of
February (!). Needless to say, upon inspection, it will need a
complete rebuild, piano and player, so I agreed to help find them
someone in that area who could help.
The piano serial number is 104802, and although I have not yet looked
it up, some features, such as the sliding glass door over the roll
compartment, are consistent with the early 1920s. In my experience,
this vintage also used wooden-cover "upside-down" valves, but this
stack has right-side up valves with metal covers which look original.
Some tubing and cloth replacement was apparently done about 20 years
ago, but little of it can be salvaged in my opinion, so it should be
considered a total rebuild. Interested parties can contact me privately
for further details.
Thanks,
John Grant
