Restore the Piano When Restoring the Player
By Don Teach
Way too often I see people thinking that because a piano has loose
tuning pins and may not hold its tuning, that the piano is junk.
Wait a minute! Most of these pianos are now one hundred years old and
should be restored. I regularly replace the pin blocks in these pianos
and it is not that hard.
If you are going to the trouble of restoring the player parts that are
dry rotten then you should also be prepared to restore the actual piano.
There are several sources of information about restoring the piano parts
-- use them. Old piano actions with hard leather and rotten cloth can be
repaired; it just takes a little time.
I have always said any piano can be restored if you will just take the
time. Do one part at a time if in doubt.
