Not just this fine Ampico B that I worked on with Ken, but considerably
more items from the September 11th, 2020, Miller and Miller online
Auction shared with the Jack Winkler estate -- I attended the auction
that day and saw and recorded prices for every item presented.
I feel fortunate to have won Ken's electric Victor Orthophonic with the
tooled polychromed leather case, two portable 'picnic' style phonographs
and 180 'Hits of the Week' fibreboard recordings -- issued weekly
between 1930 and 1932 for sale only at News Stands at 10 cents each.
I was last second outbid for the Knabe and was shocked it went for only
$900. I picked up my items that same week and found Miller & Miller
staff to be totally forthright and professional. I saw many of Ken's
larger items in the holding area being prepared for shipment and was
told most were destined for the USA.
So what happened [in 2020]? I recall how bids were flying fast
and furious all day as the auction went into the early evening hours.
Perhaps any MMD'ers that participated and won and received their
objects will share your stories with us.
In addition to Ken's 5'6" Knabe, now including a roll collection and
listed as 'bidding extended' are the $21k 27" Orchestral Regina, Bush
& Lane upright Welte, the Wurlitzer jukeboxes, the Seeburg and Coinola
orchestrions -- in fact, by my count 80% of Ken's collection is up for
bid again from the same Auction house almost a year later. I notice
that each item [now] has a starting re-bid equal to the winning price
of last September.
I've left several messages with M&M for more information. If I now
have the chance to save Ken's Ampico B & Welte in Canada I will do so
immediately.
I am driving the 20 minutes to New Hamburg on Saturday seeking in person
clarification and possible purchase.
I will update when I have an explanation of what happened to make these
items available again. Is it Covid related, border closing or import
fees related, an over-zealous meg-bidder or a site hack?
