Dear readers of MMD, I have the pleasure to announce Journal No. 141 of
DMM, Journal of the German association "Gesellschaft fuer Mechanische
Musikinstrumente" which right now is on its way to our members. Those
who are curious can already take a look at the table of contents on our
website:
https://www.musica-mechanica.de/pages/de/journal/inhaltsverzeichnisse/47.-jahrgang/no.-141-august-2021.php
Again we've tried to cover as broad a spectrum of interests as
possible, ranging from a new web portal on Berlin flute clocks
reported by Silke Kiesant, to a richly illustrated article in which
Ullrich Wimmer shows some historical postcards from the turn of the
19th and 20th centuries from his collection featuring barrel organ
players in Germany, to relatively new technology that I recently
re-discovered on MMD: A 1/6 scale Japanese toy from SEGA with real
Yamaha piano sound -- associated with this are many ideas on how to
use this to listen to all those short ragtime rolls from the early
days of pianolas, which are nowadays available as MIDI.
I translated an article about barrel organ playing in Norway for the
Journal of CDD (another German association) and requested approval
to reprint it in our Journal -- here we go!
Ralf Smolne reports on a lot of work: the repinning of a musical box
cylinder, an interesting report for all lovers of these instruments
in which the individual work steps are explained in detail (Part I).
Albert Lötz delivers an article on the conversion of music rolls
into musical notes and MIDI - I personally think we will not be able
to ignore this new technologies on the long run. Birgit Heise and
Jost Mucheyer report on the repair of an "Othello"-barrel orchestrion.
Of course you will also find other interesting articles and, as usual,
the summaries of the journals of our international friends. Enjoy the
new issue!
Musical regards,
Uwe Gernert - Editor, Das Mechanische Musikinstrument
