My neighbor is trying to identify a family instrument, and it has an
interesting story. I'm going to call it "instrument" because I don't
know what it is. Please see the picture at the link below. It has a
music roll mechanism, a pump, a piano and percussion instruments. This
is the only picture the family has.
Sometime before 1951 her dad found this instrument in a barn in the
Dallas, TX area; she doesn't know exactly when or where. He took it all
apart, put it all back together again and got it playing. In 1951 he
took it to the Texas State Fair in Dallas. He intended to make some money
off of it by having people play it. It apparently had a coin slot.
No one really remembers if he was displaying it in the parking lot or
on the fair grounds, or wherever. Someone from a local news source heard
about it, came to see it and wrote a short piece in the newspaper
(unknown what paper). This publicity led to a woman coming to see it and
buying it, right then and there, for her son. That money was used as a
down payment on their first house!
The family would like to know if this instrument can be identified, what
is it (make, model, manufacturer, etc.)? How old is (was) it? Is there
any possible way of tracking it down?
Could any of you help with even one bit of information? My neighbor's Mom
(wife to the man who restored it) is turning 90, and for Mom's birthday
she would like to solve some of the mysteries.
Thank you so much for any information you might be able to provide.
