I'm happy to see some enthusiasm for this clever little toy.
Responses have all been helpful as I take a deep dive into realizing
the full capabilities of the Sega "Grand Pianist" and we all share
what we know and have. Here's where I am so far this week.
Since my scanner setup uses Windows 98SE to scan and process, and
Windows XP to edit MIDI files and drive the pianos I fired up the XP
laptop (which has never seen the internet and was last used about 3
years ago) to find 'no operating system detected'. Yikes. Fortunately
most of the 2700+ MIDI files are backed up on a portable drive as well
as archived on Terry's site.
Not eager to do further damage, the eMachines XP is now in the hands
of my tech to have its contents transferred to another portable drive.
I intuit that it is important to stay within the 32 bit XP OP and so
I have on the way from Moncton New Brunswick a refurbished clean
install Windows XP Laptop HP Pavilion Intel Core 15.4 DVD+/-RW Retro
Gaming Computer. I will replace the disk drive with a solid state drive
as soon as possible to avoid future failure.
Hopefully I can continue to use legacy hardware and software for this
Sega project and others. Windows 10 64-bit did not respond well to my
efforts, and SD cards loaded with *.fem files were not recognized by
the Sega piano.
If there is a workaround someone will let me know. Meanwhile, it's back
to the 2000s for SEGA and Me.
