Dear friends of mechanical music, I'd like to announce that "Das
Mechanische Musikinstrument" Vol. 140, Journal of the German association
"Gesellschaft für Selbstspielende Musikinstrumente e.V." (GSM), is on
its way to our members and I'm happy to give you a short overview of
that volume.
The 140th edition consists of 84 pages. For all friends of pianolas
and orchestrions, you'll find an article by Hans-W. Schmitz about the
cooperation of the firms of M. Welte & Söhne with the Leipzig-based firm
of Popper & Co. -- really a profound research about how this cooperation
finally came to an end because of differences about marketing and prices
between both.
Claudia Nauheim shows the results in her in-depth research on the German
pianist Oswin Keller with all of the roll material he produced during
his lifetime for Hupfeld but also many other German-based companies.
Maybe this will give you a chance to identify some of the rolls in your
own collections.
I'm very proud that finally Museum Speelklok fulfilled their promise to
give an overview about the restauration of the clock- and pipe-work of
the so-called "Braamcamp Clock" with lots of aspects to this masterpiece
by the London-based clockmaker Charles Clay. I personally contribute
with an article on how to date and find out about an nearly unknown
maker of small barrel organs with the name of Bufe at Gera, which were
sold by Spaethe, another firm based in that German town. Daniel Becki
did a small research about a text for barrel organ he found in a novel
by Fanny Reventlow.
Our Belgian friends of mechanical music had one of the best ideas to
find an alternative for their New Year's reception which they called the
COVID Concert 2021 and which is still available on YouTube. I recommend
this to you for watching and listening if you not already have done so;
this was also announced in MMD some time ago:

As usual you'll find short summaries of the contents of international
journals.
