The Best Leather Adhesive is Hot Hide Glue
By John A. Tuttle
Hi All, I feel certain that I'm not alone in thanking Art Reblitz for
his posting about using hot hide glue. Many of you might not be aware
that the company that made the "Hold-Heet" Electric Automatic Glue Pot,
which was made in the USA and used by generations of rebuilders, is no
longer available.
This leads me to wonder how long it will be before the demand for animal
hide glue diminishes to the point where it will no longer be made in
this country. An article I read said that there is only one company left
in the USA that makes traditional hide glue. One 'hide glue' maker says
this at their website:
"But contrary to popular belief, some animal glues no longer contain
animal skin, tissue or bone as their primary ingredient, but instead
use recycled gelatin as their primary ingredient."
They go on to say that they have replaced the primary ingredient in
their animal glues with recycled pharmaceutical and nutritional gelatin.
It saddens me to think that a product that has served so many so well
for over 4000 years might one day disappear.
Musically,
John A Tuttle
