Mechanical Music on TV - "Wild Wild West"
By Mike Walter

Hi All,

A good friend of mine gave me the entire four Seasons of the TV Show:
"The Wild Wild West" on DVDs. I have been watching the DVDs in series,
and I am now on Season Four.

Episode #9 is very memorable, for it's uniqueness and also incongruity.
In "The Night Of Fire And Brimstone", the two heroes are in a "deserted"
town which is built on top of a "smoking" mine. They are trying to meet
a contact who told them about a "treasure" hidden after the Civil War.

The series is set in the 1870s or 1880s. Before the story develops very
far, the "good guys" are involved in a shoot-out against the "bad guys"
who have taken over the town. The good guys have taken refuge in an old
storage building, where they can shoot at the bad guys, through broken
windows. One bullet, which comes into the building, hits an old piano,
which turns out to be a Seeburg E Nickelodeon! It immediately comes to
life and starts playing for a short period of time.

[ When the stray bullet hits the player piano during the shootout,
[ Artie says "What do you know? They're playing us out with music.
[ Bad music, but music." Jim replies, "That gives me no comfort at
 [ all, Artie."

The E does have the identifiable glass lights on either side of the
stained glass, which is missing, but is replace with clear glass that
shows metal xylophone bars, which seems unusual. It also displays the
three knobs to the left of the glass display. The case is mahogany, not
oak. The best part of the DVD disc is that it can be stopped and you can
get a chance to actually view the piano. What is a 1920s piano doing
in the 1870s or 1880s? It's fun to see.
