Duplicated Holes on Welte Brisgovia Rolls
By Christian Tedesco

Hello all, I was looking into the Welte Brisgovia orchestrions and
I noticed an anomaly in the roll scale. The holes for Sforzando on/off
(holes 2/5) are duplicated in positions 95/96. In addition, there is
holes for Swell Shade open/closed (3/4) and Crescendo on/off (97/98).

I know on the Welte Cottage organs the crescendo holes work the swell
shades, so if this trait continues into the Brisgovia line it would be
a second set of duplicated holes.

I don't know Brisgovias well, so I don't know why these features would
be duplicated. A link to the roll scale is below so everybody knows
what I am talking about. If anybody has insights into these instruments
please enlighten me!

[ Art Reblitz explains: "Although this 'universal scale' Welte
[ 100-hole orchestrion roll is ostensibly used for many different
[ Welte orchestrion styles, including Concert Orchestrions nos. 5 to
[ 10, Brisgovia IV to VII, Wallhall, Wotan, Philharmonic Organ I and
[ I, and others, in actuality Welte manufactured special rolls using
[ only those holes which would be appropriate to the registers and
[ voicing of each model. Thus, while a roll made for a Wotan Brass
[ Band Orchestrion will play on a much smaller Brisgovia orchestrion,
[ the musical and expression results are not as satisfactory as if
[ the correct roll is used on each instrument."
