Removing Key Frame From Early Chickering Ampico
By Kermit Hobbs
I have an early Chickering Ampico parlor grand piano that plays fine,
but the hammer action seriously needs regulating.
The problem is that I can't get out the hammer action/key frame.
The hammers are all at rest, and all visible obstacles are removed.
I've dropped the lyre and everything under the piano bed to ensure
that there are no screws or pins that could be projecting into the
key frame from the bottom. I've pulled on the key frame as hard
as I dare, not wishing to damage the key frame. It won't budge the
slightest bit.
I slid a strip of steel banding under the key frame at different
places across the width, and it goes all the way to the back except
for an area at the middle of the keyboard. There, the key frame is
pulled down tight to the key bed.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get this thing out?
