Mechanical Royalty Stamps on Music Rolls
By Kevin McElhone
I am helping a stamp collector to research the colourful musical
copyright stamps found on music rolls such as those for the player
piano and Aeolian Orchestrelle [player organ]. I am trying to find
what the highest values used were and as many different publisher
names as possible.
I am particularly intrigued by the illustrated stamp found on an
88-note piano roll, V102543, made in USA by Rythmodik of a tune
called "I'm A-longin' fo' You", composed 1914 by Hathaway and
played by Andrei Kmita.
This is the first time I have seen a stamp which has a serial
number on it and I wondered if this was common or indeed if any
other makers numbered their stamps. In later years a rubber stamp
was used on the rolls so these colourful stamps were only used
perhaps for the years circa 1906 to circa 1930. Any additional
information would be welcomed.
