Pianola Repeats Chained Note Perforations
By Joel Cluskey

Thanks to all who contacted me personally and responded directly
to MMD regarding my inquiry on repeating chained notes. There was
a general consensus that it related to either bleed size and porosity
of the pouches or the quality of the piano roll punching.

I sealed the existing pouches with very thin PVC-E glue which did make
them quite air tight, but the roll still repeated notes. I then more
closely examined the punched roll and concluded that was the primary
culprit.

I happened to have two issues of the same roll (QRS "Mrs. Robinson"),
one of which played fine, the other I had the problems with. See
attached photo for comparison. The second photo is a close-up of
the punchings on the bad roll. Various other rolls with chained
perforations play fine.

The only lagging issue is that my Simplex player piano plays both
rolls just fine. Perhaps that is because of the triangulated holes?
Strange...

Again, thanks to all. This is such an awesome resource!

Sincerely,
Joel Cluskey - Cluskey's Piano Works
