We're having a "new" problem with our mailing list service provider that
has caused some delays with our mailing. Today they required me to
unsubscribe 192 email addresses because their records indicate that these
subscribers "NEVER" open any of the e-mail messages I send. They are
concerned that these subscribers don't want to receive the MMD and so
they aren't opening them. Further, they are worried that I may be
sending the MMD to people who didn't "opt in." Of course everyone
that receives the MMD _DID_ opt in, but not everyone want to continue
to get it. Not everyone remembers how to unsubscribe if they change
their mind. The maling service is concerned about THEM getting a bad
reputation by sending unwanted email.
Here's the puzzle. They measure "opened" by seeing whether the user
displays any of the images in the article. We post the MMD banner
at the top of the e-mail so if your mail program displays the banner
the mail registers with our provider as having been read.
The problem is that some mail readers intentionally suppress the
displaying of images unless you ASK the mail reader to display the
image. Outlook and Thunderbird do this intentionally to preserve
the user's privacy. You have to ASK to have the images downloaded.
So, if you aren't seeing the MMD Banner at the top of your email,
you could help us out by asking your email program to display the image.
Usually it's sufficient to right-click on the shadow of the image and
tell the mailer to show it.
I suspect that some of the 192 email addresses I unsubscribed today
are real subscribers that want their MMDs delivered by e-mail. If you
are reading this article on the website and are one of those people that
they made me cut off today, PLEASE let me know that your MMD stopped
coming.
If you ARE getting your MMDs and aren't seeing the banner at the top,
please tell your mail reader to display the banner.
Thanks!
Jody
