Over the past year, I have transcribed numerous Mills Violano Virtuoso
songs and Encore Banjo songs from punched paper rolls into MIDI files.
On one slow afternoon, even a nickelodeon A-roll was transcribed to
MIDI. Most of the songs transcribed to MIDI were recorded so long ago
that they are now in the public domain.
I would like to share these files with others who may have
MIDI-operated Violanos, banjos or nickelodeons. Today it has become
easier than ever to convert punched media to MIDI. So there may be
others who also have public domain MIDI music to share.
There are a few websites where MIDI collections of player piano songs
are available for free download. I applaud those generous and
foresighted individuals who formed and maintain the sites themselves.
The primary collectors organizations (MBSI, AMICA, etc.) seem to be
missing a great opportunity to gain new members by not yet doing this
for MIDI automatic music.
I value the thoughts of fellow MMDers and would love to hear from you
on this topic: Should there be a website where individuals can upload
MIDI files of public domain music for automatic instruments, so it can
be shared with others? If so, who would be most appropriate to do it?
