Is there an online resource that provides the publication dates for
Ampico rolls? My Google-fu has failed me.
YouTube has asserted that someone has made a copyright claim against
me for posting a recording of Ampico roll 57143-G, Waltz Op. 70,
No. 3, by Frederic Chopin. Clearly the composition itself is out
of copyright (it was composed ca. 1830 and published in 1855), but
if the piano roll is 1924 or earlier the claim is completely bogus,
at least in the USA. There's no date on the recut I have.
Should it be necessary to obtain copyright permission to use the
Ampico recording? Who currently owns the copyrights to post-1924
Ampico rolls?
I assume those rights have passed to some successor corporation.
I know it will be much more complicated than that since the mechanical
rights may well be held separately from the publishing rights, but
it's a starting point.
If someone has actually gotten permission to use a recording of
a copyright Ampico roll and could share what they did, that would
be extremely helpful, as I'd like to post other recordings that are
clearly still under copyright.
