Unusual Player Piano Things Found At Yard Sales
By David Dewey
In moving around my stuff today, I "re-discovered" my Auto Pneumatic
vacuum gauge. I have had this gauge over 35 years -- back long enough
that when I found it, I didn't really realize what a gem I had lucked
out on. Why it was there, I have no idea. I don't recall anything
else at the sale that would suggest the seller had an interest in
mechanical music stuff.
However I did also find a flyer for the "Avalon" party paddlewheel
riverboat. She is known today as the "Belle of Louisville" and she is
the oldest paddlewheel steamboat still running in the USA. This may be
her last year however, as the current "stay at home" orders have shut
her down, and she is due for her 5-year hull inspection. Without this
inspection she cannot continue to operate and the City of Louisville
(which owns her) is also way under-funded, so the $700,000 bill for the
inspection isn't likely to be funded. Dire times!
Somewhat off-subject, but what a neat thing to find at a yard sale!
