This is a response to Ross Schacher about the modern Harman Peck
"Duo Art" modern player. Hi Ross, I am very familiar with these
"Duo Art" (if a console piano) or Musette (if a spinet piano) pianos.
Both of these styles are 88-note models. I see so many of these for
free, or for very little, that I would "pass" on this one and keep
looking for a piano that is in better condition to start with.
I try to help re-home well cared for ones that I come across on
Craigslist of FB Marketplace. Many of these pianos are decent and
have been taken good care of for the last 45 years or so in a heated
and air conditioned home.
If the piano is THAT out of tune and you can't get anything out of the
player stack, I would not waste my time and efforts. These 1960s-70s
plastic valve pianos either still pump okay or they leak terribly.
The modern Aeolian players, that one finds still pumping fairly
easily, mostly need several hours of attention to start playing well
again.
Be sure that the air motor is lubricated with graphite so that it
doesn't "lope" in Play position. The grease in the transmission needs
to be cleaned out and replaced so that all metal parts will turn
effortlessly. I would not start putting on new hammers and dampers
either.
There are just too many well preserved modern players out there these
days without spending way too much time and effort on lesser
instruments.
