For sale: a Marque Ampico -- an unusual pedal player. I had three
electric Ampico expression players before I discovered the more
"versatile" pedal operated model.
The electric Ampico playing special rolls has three playing ranges,
basically. The Marque Ampico has five ranges plus three soft pedals
and a transposer as well! You keep a floating gauge in one of the five
levels and the expression system rivals the more common electric models.
This 1926 player becomes a spritely player for regular 88-note rolls
when you flip a switch. Beyond changing keys with the transposer there
are (soft pedal) hammer rail lifts to choose: full keyboard, bass and
treble.
I bought it for proofing Ampico releases but Lois' health failed soon
after it was restored. At age 82 in a few weeks, I will concentrate
on creating and publishing 88-note and Duo-Art rolls primarily.
A few Ampico releases are in the works but I will concentrate on those
two formats.
This Brewster stencil piano is a Wm. Knabe in disguise, I have been
told. It is massive and heavy, unlike other instruments bearing that
name. The Marque Ampico was rebuilt by Bob Hunt and the deluxe-voiced
Abel hammers were installed by PTG craftsman Paul Rice.
There is no room for another piano in my Wiscasset home. The Marque
Ampico is in my Boothbay storage building, now being emptied with
stockpiled copies of my Artcraft Rolls, and the structure will be
sold soon.
I have $600 in the piano and about $2500 in the player restoration.
I am asking $900 f.o.b. for the instrument, and for a quick sale
I will hold it for a month or two for $450 dollars.
Enjoy Ampico "reproducing" expression rolls and anything made for
88-note pedal players, with great tone, and with responsive dynamics
playing standard rolls.
