Hello all, Regarding Kip Williams' article about the "Rhapsody in
Blue" LP record of long ago [200103 MMDigest]. It was my Steinway
Duo-Art XR (only 5' 8" long) that was taken to Severance Hall
(home of the Cleveland Orchestra) to record the Gershwin roll.
The orchestra parts on the piano roll were blocked; each hole was
covered with little pieces of magnetic reel tape, which was the
thinnest available so as not to make the roll too big and perhaps
change the speed. Certainly a 7- or 9-foot piano would have been
better!
Well, it is my claim to fame and you will see my name in the notes
on the back of the record jacket!
Best,
Marc Goodman

P.S.: By the way, I cannot stand to hear "Rhapsody in Blue" as it
has been played to death!

[ Marc, what was the catalog number of the Duo-Art roll that was
[ played on your piano for the Columbia LP recording? Did you
[ cover the holes of a production Duo-Art roll of 1925? I'm
[ trying to figure out why it played so fast; the jazz orchestra
[ could hardly keep up with the piano! -- Robbie
