"Rhapsody in Blue" Roll With Jazz Orchestra
By Kip Williams

I was excited when Michael Tilson Thomas conducted the Columbia Jazz
Band in "Rhapsody in Blue" along with Gershwin's roll recording, but
I was disappointed by the result, which left the piano part sounding
thin. It felt as though piano notes were removed along with orchestral
notes, leaving a flimsy texture for the soloist's part.

I hope when they do that now, they look with the aim of leaving the
entire solo part intact, rather than seeking to remove all orchestra
notes. I'd rather hear "too many" notes from Gershwin's remarkable
fingers than too few.
