I am trying to figure out if my copy of Aeolian Organ Duo-Art roll
3656 has several errors. Since the group of Duo-Art organ owners
is small, this post will appear in several places, including MMD.
This roll is Archer Gibson's interpretation of Lohengrin, Bridal
Procession to the Cathedral (Wagner). I give the performance high
marks. From the opening trumpet fanfare from the cathedral tower
signaling the beginning of the procession, the fanfare gets
progressively softer as the signal is relayed to more distant locations.
Finally it is almost inaudible as it reaches the location of the bridal
party.
The procession begins. Gibson uses various registrations to build the
excitement as the group approaches the site of the wedding. During one
reiteration of the theme, the melody is so much softer than the harmony,
that the melody is nearly lost. This condition of imbalance happens
two more times in the roll. During one episode of this imbalance, the
chimes play the harmony, which is really odd. Earlier, the chimes had
been used to play the melody and it is very effective.
I suspect that there are missing stop changes in the roll or that the
manuals are reversed. By that I mean that the perforations in the roll
become flip-flopped, between the upper and lower.
My request that anyone owning this roll, 3656, give it a listen to see
if you notice what I have described. Better yet, if anyone has a scan
of the roll in MIDI format, I would love to examine the scan.
Finally, any organists in the group who can, give the roll a listen
and offer your thoughts. I can make a good audio recording for those
who want to listen and analyze the roll.
