Unknown Rolls 8 Holes per Inch, 6-1/2" Wide
By Dennis Steckley
I picked up these three rolls today and am attaching some pictures.
The "leaders" of these rolls are long gone, so I have no idea of
manufacturer or tunes. Each roll is 6-1/2" wide (no, they do _not_
seem to be the 6.63" width of a B.A.B. roll). I don't know how many
holes are possible since there is no point where every note would be
played at once. Certainly more than 20 holes are possible, but I'm
not sure beyond that.
The inside diameter of the core is approximately 1-3/4". Two of
the rolls have a rectangular wooden cube on the inside of one end of
the cardboard spool, presumably to hold it in place on the playing
mechanism. The third roll has a smaller metal clip in the same spot.
That roll also has paper of mottled green as you can see in the
pictures. Whether this is significant or a part of the aging process
I don't know.
The paper of these rolls is obviously old and a bit brittle, but
I judge they would be playable with care. I would be happy to
receive more information about them, as well as what to do with them.
They are probably not something I will want to keep, but I wanted to
save them from getting dumped as just some old paper junk.

[ I modified the photo with the ruler so the dimensions are visible.
[ The horizontal pitch is exactly 8 holes per inch, as in music
[ rolls that play band organs by Artizan, North Tonawanda, and B.A.B.
[ The edges are very worn; when new they might have been 6.63" wide.
