Unknown Tunes on Mills "Judge" Slot Machine
By Bob Rentzer
I have a "Judge" upright slot machine made by Mills Novelty Company
in 1898. One or more nickels were inserted to select one to five
colors. The machine would pay out ten cents to one dollar in nickels
if the color wheel stopped on the corresponding color selected. When
the wheel stopped the built-in music box movement would play one of
10 tunes. (The music feature was added to avoid gambling laws since
the theory was that a player inserted a nickel to hear the music.)
Since there was no song sheet on the music box itself, and no
record of the tunes in the machine, I seek help to name the tunes.
A 5-1/2 minute MP3 audio recording of all 10 tunes can be heard at
the link below.
The 42-note movement plays 10 tunes on a 6-inch long cylinder; see
the photos at the links below. Four of the ten tunes have already
been identified thanks to Don Caine of Lomita, California:
1.
2. "Stars and Stripes Forever" (1897)
3. "Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight" (1896)
4. "Hello My Baby, Hello My Honey" (1899)
5.
6.
7.
8.
9. "Over The Waves" ("Sobre las Olas", 1888)
10.
Mario Lanza later recorded "Over the Waves" as "The Loveliest Night
of the Year".
Thanks in advance for your help.
