I'm so grateful to Jim Miller for the links to such treasure trove
[191014 MMDigest]. Here's hoping that the Arden & Ohman Vitaphone
film will reappear. The three 1923 Eubie Blake Phonofilms are
wonderful. At one point Blake says to Sissle, "This ain't no movie,
this is the talkies!" Which understandably has led at least one
YouTube viewer to question whether the films can be as early as 1923
-- but there seems no doubt that they are.
There are several British Pathé shorts on YouTube of Billy Mayerl,
who though best known as a gramophone recording artist made some
Aeolian rolls and one Duo-Art. The 1944 British Pathé short, "Good
Hunting," shows his solo playing well.
On YouTube are at least two videos of silent films recently synchronised
with pre-electric recordings (not originally made to go with the films):
"Saint-Saens plays Valse Mignonne" (1914 film plus 1919 record) and
"Percy Grainger plays Maguire's Kick". Both pianists recorded these
pieces on Duo-Art so it would be interesting to try matching roll with
film. Seeing and hearing Saint-Saens like this is astonishing when we
remember that he was born in 1835.
