Replacement Ampico B Drawer Motor Fiber Gear
By Wayne Finger
There is a fiber gear in the Ampico Model B drawer motor assembly
that frequently wears out or looses teeth. It is a complicated
(and expensive) gear to machine because it is a small helical gear.
I was contacted by George Epple a few years ago about 3D printing
an affordable replacement for this gear. After several challenging
evenings at the CAD program I developed a 3D design and printed it
in ABS plastic. Recently I received a report from George, "Your
gears are working well. I inspected one that has been heavily used
and it showed no signs of wear."
Now that there is confidence in the design and the product is usable,
I want to make it available permanently to all those interested in
mechanical music and reproducing pianos. Following is a link to
"Pinshape" which is a website where the .stl file may be downloaded
for a small fee:
https://pinshape.com/items/55196-3d-printed-ampico-b-drawer-motor-gear-replacement
You can print this .stl file with your own 3D printer or a friend's
3D printer. Some libraries now have 3D printers available for patrons
to use. From this file you can print as many gears as you need.
Best wishes for enjoying Ampico reproducing piano music for generations
to come!
